One Gem at PSM is Harry Copenhaver of Happy Trails Memorabilia and Collectibles

One of the best things about the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show is the regular vendors at the event. Walking the aisles you tend to see many of the same faces every time and while you might not need that special widget that a certain vendor has this time, it’s nice to know they’ll be there next time. One of these perennial favorites is Harry Copenhaver of Happy Trails Memorabilia and Collectibles.

Harry with just a small sampling of his plates

You can find Harry on Road 29, Spaces 18, 20, 22, 24 selling all sorts of automotive-related collectibles from vintage license plates to oil cans, oil filling devices, books, license plate frames and much, much more.

I spoke with Harry recently because I thought it might be really cool to get vintage license plates for my wife’s ’61 Lakewood Wagon that she got for her birthday this year. While the wagon looks cool, it would look more so with some authentic vintage plates, so I asked Harry about getting her some ’61 license plates. That’s when I realized how much this gentleman knows about his collection.

“There were no plates in 1961,” said the Swap Meet veteran, “In those days you would get a 1956 plate and then there would be a metal tab that updated that plate to ’61.”

Apparently, it wasn’t until 1963 that California went to the black plates with yellow lettering with a unique plate for each specific year. Immediately preceding this, our state used yellow plates with black lettering.

Harry had more knowledge to share about license plates. For example, many people find old plates and decide to restore them themselves, or hire the job out. But like restoring anything that’s been on the planet for some time, there are people who do a good job, and those who don’t.

“I get folks who want to trade with me here,” he continued. “They have plates that aren’t the year they want and I look theirs over. Often times someone tried to restore them and did a terrible job.”

Oh, did we mention that Harry also likes to restore vintage items such as license plates or oil memorabilia?

“I’ve got a good talent at painting items and applying decals so they look like they were just made.”

Walking through the incredible treasure trove that occupies four swap spaces that make up Harry’s area, you wonder where in the world one person has come up with this much really cool stuff. It’s as if Harry brings an entire museum’s worth with each visit. But the huge selection that Harry has at the Swap Meet is the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Harry’s got one heck of a collection and he obtained it piece by piece in the same fashion that has been portrayed on the television program American Pickers.

Harry Copenhaver with a few of his oil cans

You see, Harry used to drive truck all over these United States delivering vegetables at first, then products made by Lucas Oil. While he was navigating the highways and byways of this great country Harry would occasionally spot another collector with the kinds of great oil-related items that appealed to him. He’d stop and make a new friend and, before you know it, he’d be trading in petroleum collectibles.

Heck, working for himself Harry already had a truck ready, willing and able to conspire on his collecting habits. However, in those days it wasn’t so popular to make a new restaurant look old with cool petro collectibles, it was just guys who appreciated the nifty porcelain signs and old oil cans and the like who happened to trade with one another. In other words, the old stuff was just old stuff and wasn’t worth much to anybody but the folks who really, really liked it. After all, who would want stuff from a gas station?

Apparently, lots of people nowadays. Many people collect vintage automotive memorabilia and Harry’s got it in droves. Of course, not everybody agrees with the value of Harry’s collection, so occasionally, when a customer and Harry have a differing opinion about the value of something at Harry’s place, he’ll offer to flip a coin for the value. Hey, haven’t we seen those guys on American Pickers steal this idea?

Over four decades, Harry amassed one heck of a collection of great stuff and the knowledge to go with it. His initial plan was to pass the collection off to his family, but it turns out that they weren’t as fascinated by these exceptional items as their father, so he brought a few items to the Pomona Swap Meet after retiring in 2001. Next thing you know, it’s a decade later and he’s a fixture here with lots of people coming to Harry to make their authentic restorations more so.

Customers really like the way Harry deals with them. He knows what he’s talking about and can give people what they want. If they want a meticulously restored plate to go with that shiny classic, or one that’s got a few rust spots to match the vehicle it’s screwed to. If you are looking for a vintage oil product or maybe some collectible oil cans to make your garage that much cooler, come see Harry – he’ll be at the next Swap Meet.

Happy Trails Collectables Vintage Oil Applicators

I asked Harry if it was even legal to have a vintage plate on a car and he said there is some work involved, but it is. His first stop before a plate makes it to the Swap Meet is at the Automobile Club where he checks whether a plate is “clear” or not. In other words, if they have no record of a vehicle being registered with the plate numbers, then the plate is just like a new plate and can be used as a legal plate on your vehicle. “I’ve never had anybody come back with a complaint, stated Harry.”

That’s saying a lot considering the huge volume of collectibles Harry’s matched with happy owners over the past decade. And some of those collectors aren’t just your friends and neighbors, but have flown over from places like Japan, Italy, Germany and other corners of the globe.

Can you imagine the amazement someone has when they experience the Pomona Swap Meet for the first time? That ‘wow’ would be worth the entire plane ticket from any corner of the globe, so many of us are lucky to have such a treasure in our own back yard. And one of the gems in that treasure chest is Harry Copenhaver of Happy Trails Memorabilia and Collectibles. See you next show, Harry!

At the January 15th Pomona Swap Meet, we will be welcoming the Cal-Rods Car Club San Gabriel Valley as our Featured Car Club. The club was established in 1954 by Don Scurti and some students at Baldwin Park High School with the goal of learning how to work on their cars and figure out what makes them run. The club flourished for about 10 years, hanging out at the clubhouse that they had built, holding an annual picnic and supporting local charities, before it faded. The club, however, lived on in the hearts and dreams of the schoolmates every time they saw a hot rod or old car from their now fading youth.

In 1998, Cal-Rods Car Club was rejuvenated by some of the original members who had never lost their passion for hot rods or spending time with friends and family. They successfully organized a picnic and car show, which was held at San Dimas Park. In 1999, the re-formed club began meeting at Shakey’s Pizza for a weekly cruise and held the 2nd Annual B.P.H.S. Reunion Picnic and Cal-Rods Car Show, which attracted 450 people and 50 cars. The picnic has been held on the first Sunday of May ever since, with attendance of approximately 800 people and 125+ street rods annually.

Cal-Rod members following their passion

Cal-Rods of the San Gabriel Valley, now with over 500 members, organize many events during the year with the purpose of having a good time while raising money for various local charities. These include events for both the guys and the ladies. They enjoy picnics, cruises, poker runs, a car show charity benefit, Christmas toy drives, several 1 to 3 day fun runs and a Christmas dinner dance. The club is lucky enough to hold it’s meeting on the first Tuesday of each month at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona, CA and usually feature a guest speaker from the racing community who share their history and interest with the club. Not a bad venue for a car club to call “their clubhouse”. The Cal-Rods also supply the work force for the Twilight Cruise held the first Wednesday of the month (April – December) at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. It is the largest weekday cruise in the country having an average of 400 cars and a huge 50/50 and raffle. Their 6th Annual Car Show “Run with a Winner” will be held on March 25, 2012 at Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, CA where people will enjoy a car show, a day watching Thoroughbred racing and family fun. For a show flyer: FLYER.

The Cal-Rods and Cal-Rodettes, as many of the ladies are known, own a great assortment of nice cars ranging from stock restorations, traditional street rods, pro-street and full on race cars. The club’s focus is still on nice people enjoying the other club members with their cars being the common bond. Come out to the Pomona Swap Meet on January 15th, 2012 to meet them, see their vehicles and share in their passion for cars and family fun. They will be gathered in the Vintage Vehicle show/sale area off the Main Aisle.

This is the first installment of a new series of articles about a Southern California institution, The Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show. I think we should go over the basics. For the uninitiated, the PSM has been around since 1975 and they produce seven shows a year transforming the parking area next to the drag strip into a huge automotive experience and so much more!

First off, the Car Show is the Car Show, and the Swap Meet is the Swap Meet, if you want to sell parts, you can’t do it from the Car Show side of the street, (them’s the rules).

The folks at the PSM are very protective of our automotive heritage and have very defined parameters for entrants; basically, if your vehicle was made after 1975 you can pay a pretty substantial entry fee to participate, unless it’s a Corvette or a Porsche. Those two marquis are welcome regardless of year, but, running, stock vehicles built prior to 1931 drive through the gate for free!

The PSM is sooo big, wear sturdy walking shoes and get there early. I mean dark 0′clock! The spectator gate opens at 5:00 a.m. and the vendors are waiting to show you their wares.

I arrived at Gate 15 and checked in with Derrick, the man who knows EVERYTHING that’s going on! He gave me a short tour, pointing out where everything usually is, and then he turned me loose to roam. I started at Gate 17, the spectator entrance. As you walk through the turnstiles, immediately to the right is the south end vendor area which has a heavy concentration of VW/Porsche vendors. To my left, parked in nice neat rows, were the Volkswagens and Porsches being shown along with other imports. The event’s featured car club that day was The West Coast Bays. They had a great showing of their Bays of which I spent a nice time meeting the club members.

You can find pretty much anything your project vehicle might need, from LED bulbs to engine cases and everything else, there is row after row of new and used parts, vintage license plates (both US and European), books, magazines, toys and novelties. Interspersed throughout the great deals are food vendors offering all manner of treats to eat and drink, they’ve even got beer vendors here and there for responsible adult consumption. There are many vendors who are ‘fixtures’, they can be found in the same place each and every show, which can really be nice so you know you can find them next time you need something.

Besides all the serious stuff, (parts & supplies), I found some fun stuff too… VW-specific decals & patches, t-shirts, and lots & lots of toys! Die-cast models, motorized toys, kiddie-cars and wagons. Speaking of wagons, don’t forget to bring a wagon, cart or handtruck to tote your purchases around - there’s so much you’ll want to take home! I’ll be back at the next event held January 15th. I’ll be the guy mixed in with thousands of other wide-eyed, in the early morning hours, perusing the roads wearing a yellow Curbside.TV shirt. If you spot me, be sure to say, “Hi”.

Till next time – Keep Swappin’,

We Love Our Bay Windows

Many of the people who exhibit at the Pomona Swap meet have been coming here for some time – in some cases since the beginning of this event. While long-time attendees might not recognize the Volkswagen Camper group known as the West Coast Bays, they might recognize Rich Kimball or his son Andy as having the same space since the early days of the Swap Meet.

The Kimballs go back to the days when this event had a huge presence for Volkswagen and Porsche enthusiasts and while there is still a big draw for collectors of those vehicles, there is more diversity nowadays. But that hasn’t changed the focus for these folks who still pine over VW Beetles, Transporters, Type 3s, Karmann Ghias and the like. You still can find parts for early split window VWs at the Kimball’s booth space.

Orrin & Sherri Anderson's '70 Westfelia "Best in Class" winner at Irvine VW Classic

However, at the most recent Swap Meet there was something new – a lot of mid-1970s VW Campers and a display that read, West Coast Bays. Indeed, the Kimballs have kept with family tradition of starting things in the VW world and have undertaken the formation of a club for what insiders call bay window Buses. These are the VW Buses that were manufactured from 1968 all the way through 1979 when VW brought out the Vanagon.

These contrasted heavily with their predecessors by featuring things like roll-down windows on the front doors, larger engines and better brakes and a larger body for more interior space. But it’s that large, curved front window that earns them the moniker of bay window Bus.

Andy Kimball and his 1968 Panel

Like all VW vans, the bay window variety was manufactured as a passenger van, a camper, a pickup, a cargo van and several other derivations. When the Buses were reflecting light as new vehicles at the VW dealers, the passenger vans were the ones that left the lot first followed by the campers. Occasionally, a customer would order a pickup or cargo van, but import duties made those vehicles decidedly pricey, especially compared with their larger rivals from Detroit, so there weren’t a lot of pickups and vans imported here, but there definitely were a few of those still motoring around.

Ken Weis and his all-original '69 Campmobile

The West Coast Bays is a relatively new club having been formed only about a year ago, but there are already 100 members, half of which aren’t even here on the west coast but do call home places like New Zealand, Belgium and more.

This is the first outing for the club at the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show, but they have already done some fun things together such as “Big Wednesday”. Essentially, the club rents out camping space at San Onofre and the Buses come in droves with members getting a chance to compete with one another in surfing contests and other events. “It’s a fun day, but it started out as a joke,” said Kimball.

Finding a good condition Bus from the 1970s is not too difficult, but there aren’t as many as there were before European and Japanese collectors rolled through California picking up these vehicles. While these collectors aren’t around as they were, they’ve definitely depleted a good deal of the supply thereby increasing the value of these Buses. Pickups, panel trucks and other more unusual (to we Americans) configurations of this vehicle can be pricier.

So what are they worth? Well, as with all collectible vehicles there are prices all over the boards, but you can figure a good camper can be from the mid teens up to about $20,000 or so. There are definitely barn find and rough models out there for just a very few thousand dollars, but like all old vehicles, these can often have rust. “20 years ago it was almost a joke how cheaply you could buy bay window campers – people bought them and they sat in the garage most of the time,” said Kimball.

Andy Buford hanging out in his '68 Camper

For Californians, a VW Bus is an easier thing to find and maintain than perhaps it might be if you lived elsewhere. These Buses were relatively popular here and our outstanding climate means they’ve stayed pretty solid. There are a few rust spots to keep an eye on, but a rust-free Bus isn’t horribly uncommon.

Tom Riis and his '70 bus that his dad owned

As long as the body is in good shape, you’ve got a great foundation for a project as the running gear parts are easy to find and aren’t horribly expensive. As with all Volkswagens, there are plenty of other enthusiasts which means there are plenty of people who can be sources for parts, many of which are right here at the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show.

Gary & Debby Beadle restored their '69 Day Camper

While it might be surprising to some to find avid collectors and enthusiasts who are interested in something as new as a vehicle built in the 1970s, we’re all adding days to the calendar and people like to collect vehicles that they remember seeing on the streets when they were teenagers. Today’s middle-age collector remembers cars of the ’70s.

If you’re thinking of collecting a vehicle that has plenty of parts available, a large support network, is slightly unusual and makes a great companion for a weekend camping trip, a bay window Bus might be just the thing. They’re reliable, get relatively good fuel mileage and you can participate in the fun things the West Coast Bays do. And if you’re looking for more information, visit Andy or Rich in the same space the family’s had for decades – that would be Road 33 Spaces 9 & 11. (Map of Vendor Spaces - PDF)

If you want to dress up your street car, jalopy, street rod or classic, one the best looking changes you can make is new tires and rims from the Whitewall Candy Store.

Aside of the Whitewall Candy Store’s Orange, CA location, the best spot to look over these beautiful tire packages is at the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show. You can check out several whitewalls and others on Road 25, Spaces 38 through 46. Or, you can call (714) 769-4800 and ask for Rebecca Nunes. This young lady is a treat to talk with and knows her stuff about tires, rims, hubcaps and more.

Rebecca told me that her dad is the reason she is in the tire business. In fact, the whole family; dad, mom, brother Tony, and Rebecca’s fiance Ed, all contribute to the success of the venture. Her father Bill had a passion for working on the classics and raised Rebecca around collector cars, so going into the tire business was a natural for her.

The Whitewall Candy Store is a natural for all your tire needs: whitewalls, Redlines, Bluelines and Goldlines for the Antique, Classic and Modern cars and trucks. Tire brands: Cooper, Firestone, BF Goodrich and more await your approval at the Whitewall Candy Store. You want raised white letters, The Cooper Mastercraft Avenger may be the tire for you – aggressive and beautiful. You want special hubcaps to round out your classic or collectable, they either have it, or will find it, if it is available.

A visit to this booth at the show is a must. Like all the vendors at the Pomona Swap Meet, these are great people, they know their stuff and they can work with you on whatever package you need. The Pomona Swap Meet appreciates our vendors and invite our customers to meet them and look at their quality products. Be sure to also check out their website at www.classicwhitewalltires.com/ to view their product line. Also, be sure to "like" them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Whitewall-Candy-Store/76577686876 where you can get their most up to date information regarding their products and stock.

You might think that finding a fabric salesperson and a seamstress at an auto related swap meet is somewhat strange. That’s because you never met Kathy Karns of "Baggie Bags". Kathy is a special lady featuring the sales of unique car fabrics selling by the yard to Pomona Swap Meet customers. Kathy’s fabrics are also offered as finished products. Her specialties include aprons, shirts, tote bags and helmet bags.

Kathy supplies boldly colored fabrics which feature: Route 66, Chevy prints from Camaro to Corvettes, Hot rods, Skulls (a swap meet favorite), and Ford prints will be coming soon.

When you visit the Pomona Swap Meet, you will be doing yourself a favor by stopping by Road 24, Space 25 to visit Kathy and see her truly unique products. You will be impressed. Kathy performs custom work and her fabrics are so original that you will not find them at the chain fabric stores. With the holidays quickly approaching, who knows, you might need a new custom Christmas stocking. Feel free to contact Kathy at (562) 865-6168 for your classic car fabric needs.

Like so many of our folks, being a swap meet vendor is a second (or third career) for Kathy. She previously was a stage mother, raising four children who acted in movies and commercials. It was a busy time for her and after the children were living on their own, Kathy decided to go into business for herself. She had a friend who sold at the swap meet for years who convinced Kathy to come on out and give it a shot. We’re glad she did. She is a welcome addition to the Pomona Swap Meet family of vendors.

Happy Campers – West Coast Bays
As usual, it looks as though we will have a bunch of happy campers at the December 4th Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show. One large group will be happily camping, showing their vehicles and sharing stories and information in the Volkswagen show/sale section. They are the West Coast Bays and they are our Featured Car Club at the December 4th Swap Meet. Many members are regular shoppers and/or vendors at the Pomona Swap Meet, but we are privileged to have them out as a group showing their vehicles.

West Coast Bays is a group of VW enthusiasts interested in the 1968 through 1979 Volkswagen Bus, known in the VW hobby as the Bay Window. After feeling the Bay Window had kind of been neglected by the rest of the VW bus world, with so many clubs out there specifically only allowing the "Splitty" bus in (1967 and earlier), the father-son tandem of Rich and Andy Kimball thought it was about time to have a club for "the other guy". And so the West Coast Bays was formed. The club, with now over 50 members, is centered in Southern California, but includes members from all over the world, which is impressive for a club formed just four months ago.

The purpose of the club is to unite Bay Window owners and enthusiasts, informing them of up-coming Bay Window related activities, as well as parts sources and service providers. The club website, Baywindowbus.org, has a calendar of events, a place for club member photos, a "swap meet" to sell your Bay Window stuff, and a forum to discuss Bay Window topics.

Stop by the VW show/sale section on December 4th to see some cool campers and even cooler accessories. You may not see a Bay Window display like this again anytime soon.
If you would like to sign up for the club, you can click here to print out the registration form. Fill it out and mail or fax it into their offices with your payment. It’s that easy!

Studebaker, from Conestoga’s to Coupes

Early in the 18th century, the Staudenbecker family of Solingen, Germany decided they would relocate to a place that would allow them freedom of religion and of their personal lives. In 1736, they set out for America bound for a new home in Philadelphia, PA. The immigration clerks, unfamiliar with the German language recorded their name as Studebecker, Studibacker, Studebaker and other variations. They adopted the Studebaker name and while many went into farming, several family members went into blacksmithing and wagon making, designing what was to become the famous Conestoga wagon.

The Studebaker Wagon Company built wagons for the Union army during the Civil War. Later the company began making automobiles and built wagons and motorized vehicles for the U.S. Army in WWI and WWII. Their reputation for building rugged, reliable vehicles made them an easy choice for the armed forces.

For the automobile market, they hired Raymond Loewe, a famous French designer, giving the company a reputation, not only for reliability, but for style as well. Loewe designed the bullet nose, the Avanti, the Hawk and the streamlined Commander coupe. His designs were characterized by sweeping, flowing lines with a distinctive “European Look”. Unfortunately, the company did not adopt high volume tooling rapidly enough and after being absorbed by the Packard Company, they simply “got out of the business”.

My grandpa had a 1948 light green four door Studebaker. He was a Studebaker guy and often reminded me that the Studebaker was “the most dependable car on the road”. Since gas at that time was 18 cents a gallon, gas mileage was not a big concern, but he topped the tank off once a month need it or not. He would drive to the Standard Station and an attendant in a white uniform with a black leather bow tie and his name embroidered on the breast pocket would come out to fill the tank, check the oil, check the pressure in the tires and wash the front and rear windows. He would then thank you for your business. Ah, the good old days!

The Pomona Swap Meet recently had the pleasure of hosting members of the Beach Cities and Inland Empire Chapter of the Studebaker Clubs of California at our October 16th meet. The proud owners exhibited their cars for swap meet attendees.
We enjoyed having the group at the swap meet and hope they had as much fun showing their cars as our attendees had viewing them.

Thanks folks, please come back and see us, you are what the Pomona Swap Meet is all about.

As Long As It Is An Auto Show

THE 34TH ANNUAL “Run to the Sun” car show was presented on October 19-23 by the Rods and Relics car club of Lake Havasu City. The event was held on the golf course next to the beautiful Nautical Inn on the island at Lake Havasu, Arizona. This event showcases hundreds of outstanding classic cars vying for awards in a variety of categories. There were 728 cars entered, all pre 1972, and 132 car clubs were represented.

There were no spectator numbers available as we went to press, but take it from an eyewitness, the crowds were huge. There were entrants from Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and Canada. The organization was first class, with booths offering a wide variety of food and drink, including a BBQ’d, smoked turkey leg that I could not resist. There I was walking around, visiting with folks, gnawing on my turkey leg, sipping a cold beer and taking pictures of some of the most beautiful cars in the world. It just doesn’t get any better.

I had the pleasure of entering my 1940 Ford convertible in the street rod category. I thought my car was beautiful. It had enough wax on it to start my own wax museum. The valve covers were so highly polished you could use them as shaving mirrors. Every nut, bolt, was chromed and polished the wiring was neatly shrouded and tied down. My car did get an honorable mention from my neighbors.

I’m happy to report that the cars that did win truly deserved the awards and the recognition. Every car at the show was a work of art, representing thousands of hours of thought, design and labor. From the paint to the smallest details in the undercarriage and engine these owners/builders are true artists. They are sculptors in metal and fiberglass, technicians bringing a bygone era back to life. These cars are true Americana, recalling a time in history when the good old USA dominated the market through mass production technology and design innovation – a time of pride in our country and our success.

Take a look!

I wish we had more space for photos, this is just a small sampling of all that was on display, but you get the idea, that if you cannot appreciate the marriage of function and beauty, you will never truly appreciate the classic automobile.

A side note; as I strolled around, wearing my Pomona Swap Meet hat and shirt, people would give me a thumbs up salute “hey Pomona, right on, I go there all the time”.

Ah! Show biz, this is my kinda crowd.

Ford (you know, the car company that did not take any taxpayer funded stimulus) announced that they will move ahead with a one liter, three cylinder engine to be installed in the European version of the Focus compact next year. Two other autos are slated to receive the engine, a small minivan and a new compact. Hats off to Ford engineering, which, with fuel economy uppermost in mind, have come up with a car that will truly provide high mileage. In addition, through sophisticated electronics and turbo charging, the engine will provide sufficient horsepower to add zip to these compact vehicles. No extension cords or outlandishly priced batteries to deal with. No expensive dual systems and power trains, just a good reliable gasoline engine. A commuting consumers dream! Good on you Ford!

As an aside, I have a three cylinder engine in a backhoe. The engine is reliable, economical and provides all the power I need for jobs.

One Person’s Scrap Is Another Person’s Treasure

These pieces are not scrap, they are salvageable sales items. At least that’s the way Richard Romero and his son Richard Jr. view them. This view is also held by their many customers, who without these parts cannot finish their projects.

The company, Richard’s Towing, is known for selling 1937 and up auto parts and bringing entire vintage auto’s to the swap meet to be parted out. You name it: fenders, doors, hoods, trunk lids, entire dashboards with original instruments, etc. If you are restoring an older car or rebuilding a wreck, this is the place for you. Just let one of the Romero’s know what part you need and they will remove it for you.

Richard Sr. and Richard Jr. pose for us. Richard Sr. is the one on the left (he looks so young, we didn't want you to get confused.)

Richard Senior started his towing business in 1962 and was one of the original vendors at the first ever Pomona Swap Meet in 1975. His brother, proprietor of Steve and Sons Auto Sales, had vendor spaces adjacent to his at the meet. They operated side by side for twenty years on Chevy row until Steve passed away. In spite of his passing, the Romero spirit and family tradition continues.

We are pleased that the Romero’s have chosen the Pomona Swap Meet as a venue for their business. It’s people like the Romero’s, with their entrepreneurial spirit and hard work that have made our country great. They are a tradition at the meet. We salute them and look forward to a continuation of the tradition.

Please visit Richard Sr. or Richard Jr. at the next Pomona Swap Meet. They are located on Road 15, Spaces 42, 44, 46, 48 & 50. You can also contact the Romero’s at (909) 821-0262.

You want a real treat? Visit with Bobee Hoffstatter at her vendor space located at the Pomona Swap Meet on Road 24, Space 55. Bobee has a passion for the product she sells, “The Bling”. According to Bobee, this product is almost magic in its cleaning and rust removing properties. She says that “once people see what it can do, removing rust and cleaning brass, chrome, aluminum, copper and any other unpainted metal, it sells itself”. It will also remove oil, grease, tar, dirt and any other oxidation.

This magic elixir sells for $10.00 for 8 ounces and Bobee will ship it to you for an additional $5.70. To order give Bobee a call at (562)906-1943, or better yet, come see her at the Pomona Swap Meet. You will be glad you did as she is one of the nicest people you will meet.

Bobee rides a three wheel trike powered by a VW engine. Her back rims were covered with oxide, grime and rust. She was having trouble getting them clean. Bobee began to experiment and “The Bling “was born. She needs lots of Bling and elbow grease as her husband also has a turbocharged trike (see in the background) that requires lots and lots of cleaning.

We are delighted that Bobee has chosen the Pomona Swap Meet as a venue for selling her product.

I know I could and that’s why we are excited to welcome members of the Studebaker Drivers Club as our Featured Car Club, at the October 16th Pomona Swap Meet.

The Studebaker Company was founded in 1852 by the 5 Studebaker Brothers and was the only successful company to transition from building covered wagons to automobiles. In the Studebaker Club, you can find antiques from the early 1900′s all the way to the uniquely designed Avanti, which was produced in 1963 & 1964.

1963 Supercharged Studebaker Avanti

The Studebaker Drivers Club promotes the preservation of Studebaker and there are 3 club chapters in the Los Angeles, CA area representing over 200 family memberships. All chapters promote family oriented activities along with showing, driving, and displaying their Studebaker automobiles. Each chapter does its part to help the community, with proceeds from club events benefiting local charities. They encourage everyone who has a passion for Studebakers to join both a local chapter as well as the International Club, which has over 14,000 members world-wide.

Upcoming Studebaker Club Events for 2011 include the Pacific Southwest Zone Meet at the Town & Country Hotel in San Diego, CA on October 21-23, and the Annual Old World Meet in Huntington Beach, CA on November 12th at the Old World Shopping Center. For more information regarding the Studebaker Drivers Club, stop by and visit the club on the main aisle, next to the Pomona Classifieds booth or contact Don Cox at 951-734-1816 (evenings) or eMail Don at: studebaker_don@yahoo.com
