Ford (you know, the car company that did not take any taxpayer funded stimulus) announced that they will move ahead with a one liter, three cylinder engine to be installed in the European version of the Focus compact next year. Two other autos are slated to receive the engine, a small minivan and a new compact. Hats off to Ford engineering, which, with fuel economy uppermost in mind, have come up with a car that will truly provide high mileage. In addition, through sophisticated electronics and turbo charging, the engine will provide sufficient horsepower to add zip to these compact vehicles. No extension cords or outlandishly priced batteries to deal with. No expensive dual systems and power trains, just a good reliable gasoline engine. A commuting consumers dream! Good on you Ford!

As an aside, I have a three cylinder engine in a backhoe. The engine is reliable, economical and provides all the power I need for jobs.

Don't let a little rust hold you back, vintage US steel just waiting for sanding. 1940's and 1950's fenders.

One Person’s Scrap Is Another Person’s Treasure

These pieces are not scrap, they are salvageable sales items. At least that’s the way Richard Romero and his son Richard Jr. view them. This view is also held by their many customers, who without these parts cannot finish their projects.

The company, Richard’s Towing, is known for selling 1937 and up auto parts and bringing entire vintage auto’s to the swap meet to be parted out. You name it: fenders, doors, hoods, trunk lids, entire dashboards with original instruments, etc. If you are restoring an older car or rebuilding a wreck, this is the place for you. Just let one of the Romero’s know what part you need and they will remove it for you.

Richard Sr. and Richard Jr. pose for us. Richard Sr. is the one on the left (he looks so young, we didn't want you to get confused.)

Richard Senior started his towing business in 1962 and was one of the original vendors at the first ever Pomona Swap Meet in 1975. His brother, proprietor of Steve and Sons Auto Sales, had vendor spaces adjacent to his at the meet. They operated side by side for twenty years on Chevy row until Steve passed away. In spite of his passing, the Romero spirit and family tradition continues.

We are pleased that the Romero’s have chosen the Pomona Swap Meet as a venue for their business. It’s people like the Romero’s, with their entrepreneurial spirit and hard work that have made our country great. They are a tradition at the meet. We salute them and look forward to a continuation of the tradition.

Please visit Richard Sr. or Richard Jr. at the next Pomona Swap Meet. They are located on Road 15, Spaces 42, 44, 46, 48 & 50. You can also contact the Romero’s at (909) 821-0262.

The Bling Is The Thing!

Bobee demonstrating to a customer how easy it is to clean and shine with "The Bling".

You want a real treat? Visit with Bobee Hoffstatter at her vendor space located at the Pomona Swap Meet on Road 24, Space 55. Bobee has a passion for the product she sells, “The Bling”. According to Bobee, this product is almost magic in its cleaning and rust removing properties. She says that “once people see what it can do, removing rust and cleaning brass, chrome, aluminum, copper and any other unpainted metal, it sells itself”. It will also remove oil, grease, tar, dirt and any other oxidation.

This magic elixir sells for $10.00 for 8 ounces and Bobee will ship it to you for an additional $5.70. To order give Bobee a call at (562)906-1943, or better yet, come see her at the Pomona Swap Meet. You will be glad you did as she is one of the nicest people you will meet.

Bobee rides a three wheel trike powered by a VW engine. Her back rims were covered with oxide, grime and rust. She was having trouble getting them clean. Bobee began to experiment and “The Bling “was born. She needs lots of Bling and elbow grease as her husband also has a turbocharged trike (see in the background) that requires lots and lots of cleaning.

We are delighted that Bobee has chosen the Pomona Swap Meet as a venue for selling her product.

The Studebaker Drivers Club, Inc.

1950 Studebaker Commander

Who could stand to learn a little more about the Studebaker? I know I could and that’s why we are excited to welcome members of the Studebaker Drivers Club as our Featured Car Club, at the October 16th Pomona Swap Meet.

The Studebaker Company was founded in 1852 by the 5 Studebaker Brothers and was the only successful company to transition from building covered wagons to automobiles. In the Studebaker Club, you can find antiques from the early 1900′s all the way to the uniquely designed Avanti, which was produced in 1963 & 1964.

1963 Supercharged Studebaker Avanti

The Studebaker Drivers Club promotes the preservation of Studebaker and there are 3 club chapters in the Los Angeles, CA area representing over 200 family memberships. All chapters promote family oriented activities along with showing, driving, and displaying their Studebaker automobiles. Each chapter does its part to help the community, with proceeds from club events benefiting local charities. They encourage everyone who has a passion for Studebakers to join both a local chapter as well as the International Club, which has over 14,000 members world-wide.

Upcoming Studebaker Club Events for 2011 include the Pacific Southwest Zone Meet at the Town & Country Hotel in San Diego, CA on October 21-23, and the Annual Old World Meet in Huntington Beach, CA on November 12th at the Old World Shopping Center. For more information regarding the Studebaker Drivers Club, stop by and visit the club on the main aisle, next to the Pomona Classifieds booth or contact Don Cox at 951-734-1816 (evenings) or eMail Don at:  studebaker_don@yahoo.com
